Vegetable oils are rich in multiple unsaturated fatty acids such as Ω-6. Fish oil and fatty fish varieties are excellent sources of Ω-3. These fatty acids have proven their worth for dogs provided they are used as supplements in an optimal proportion: between 5 and 10 to 1. A higher dosage of Ω-3 appears to have a negative effect because of the occurrence of excessive lipid peroxidation and a lowering of the effect on the Vit E concentration.
Skin and joints protection
A research study has shown that the addition of a relatively high dosage of fish oil for a period of six weeks is effective in notably reducing skin problems such as itching and hair fall-out and in improving the glossiness of the coat. Moreover, essential fatty acids can have a direct effect on the immune response and the inflammation processes accompanying degenerative joint disorders, especially with fast-growing canine breeds.
Essential for mother and litter
Multiple unsaturated fatty acids are indispensable for the growth and neural development of foetuses and newborns. As Ω -3 fatty acids are only being transferred via the placenta and mother`s milk, the intake of Ω -3 in the food of the mother dog is seen as very important. Supplementing mother`s milk with Ω-3 also promotes the pups` visual sense. The correct dosage of Ω-3 also positively influences the fertility of the bitch, which in turn results in larger litters.
Beneficial to heart, intestines and kidneys
Ω-3 fatty acids also can prevent fatal cardiac ventricular ischemic arrhythmia. They play a positive role in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in dogs. In the case of kidney problems, Ω-3 causes a reduction of pressure and thus protects the kidney functions.
